Toyota Car Key Replacement: What Type of Key Does Your Vehicle Use?
Not every Toyota uses the same key technology, and identifying what you have is the first step toward a fast solution. Older models — roughly pre-2000 — use a standard cut metal key with no chip. From the early 2000s onward, Toyota began embedding a transponder chip inside the plastic head of the key; if that chip isn't programmed to match your vehicle's Engine Control Unit, the immobilizer will disable the starter even if the blade is cut perfectly. Many newer Camry, RAV4, Highlander, and Tundra models use a proximity smart key — also called a key fob or push-to-start fob — that communicates wirelessly with the car's receiver module. The 4Runner and 4Runner Hybrid in particular are popular across Williams County and frequently come to us needing smart-key programming after a battery failure locks the fob out of sync with the vehicle.
Our mobile technicians carry key-cutting machines and OBD-II programming tools capable of working across these Toyota key families. We can cut a new blade, clone or program a new transponder, and sync a replacement smart key or fob — all at your location. Whether you're in the Montpelier Walmart parking lot off US-20 or out near the Bryan Road corridor, we come to you. That means no flatbed tow, no waiting room, and no multi-day delay while a part ships to a dealer.
